Johanniter is working is Afghanistan since October 2002 providing emergency aid, rehabilitation of health facilities, medical care and capacity building for community health workers, students, teachers and professionals of NGOs and government agencies in disaster preparedness and first aid skills. Johanniter’s country office is located in Kabul and has operational coverage in the North, Northeastern and central region with possibility of expansion in the South and Western provinces of Afghanistan.

Job Descriptions:

Job Summary / Purpose:

The MHPSS Counsellor will play a critical role in providing mental health and psychosocial support to children and families affected. Working under the supervision of the Medical Doctor, the MHPSS Counsellor will be responsible for delivering culturally sensitive and trauma-informed counselling services to promote the well-being and resilience of beneficiaries for MHNTs.

Main Duties and Responsibilities:

  1. Provide culturally sensitive and trauma-informed individual and group counselling sessions for children, women, and families affected by drought and displacement.
  2. Conduct mental health and psychosocial assessments during mobile outreach visits, and develop appropriate care plans tailored to each beneficiary’s needs.
  3. Deliver psychoeducation sessions on stress, grief, and trauma coping strategies, promoting mental well-being and resilience in affected communities.
  4. Refer individuals requiring specialized MHPSS or protection services to appropriate partners or higher-level care, ensuring proper follow-up.
  5. Collaborate with MHNT staff (including Medical Doctor, Midwife, Nutrition Assistant) to ensure integrated service delivery and cross-sectoral support.
  6. Maintain confidential and accurate documentation of counselling sessions, assessments, and referrals in line with organizational and ethical standards.
  7. Participate in regular team meetings, case discussions, and capacity-building opportunities to enhance quality of care and staff collaboration.
  8. Adhere to organizational safeguarding and protection protocols while actively contributing to reporting, monitoring, and evaluation of MHPSS activities.

Provide confidential and trauma-informed psychosocial support to survivors of Gender-Based Violence (GBV), including referral to protection services as needed.

Job Requirements:

Education:

MD Degree from a recognized medical University.

Experience:

Three years of practical experience.

Language Professions:

Proficiency in Dari or Pashto is required.
