Job Purpose

The Poultry and Livestock Officer will provide technical support for poultry and livestock-related livelihood activities, with a focus on improving household income, productivity, animal husbandry practices, and access to sustainable market opportunities for targeted beneficiaries.

Key Responsibilities

Support the planning and implementation of poultry and livestock livelihood activities in Herat and Farah provinces.
Conduct assessments to identify suitable poultry and livestock livelihood opportunities based on local conditions, beneficiary needs, and market demand.
Provide technical guidance to beneficiaries on appropriate poultry and livestock management practices.
Support beneficiaries in improving animal husbandry, feeding, housing, breeding, hygiene, and basic disease prevention practices.
Provide technical input for the selection and distribution of appropriate poultry, livestock, equipment, feed, and other project inputs, where applicable.
Conduct or facilitate practical training and awareness sessions for beneficiaries on poultry and livestock management.
Promote sustainable, cost-effective, and climate-resilient livestock and poultry production practices.
Support beneficiaries to develop and improve poultry and livestock-based income-generating activities.
Coordinate with relevant veterinary services, agricultural departments, private-sector actors, suppliers, and other technical stakeholders.
Identify and report potential animal health and production challenges and refer cases requiring specialized veterinary attention to qualified services.
Support the identification of poultry and livestock value-chain opportunities.
Coordinate with the Market Linkage Officer to facilitate access to markets, buyers, suppliers, and other relevant market actors.
Monitor the progress and quality of poultry and livestock activities and provide technical recommendations.
Maintain proper records of beneficiaries, training activities, distributions, technical visits, and other project interventions.
Contribute to project monitoring, reporting, success stories, lessons learned, and documentation.
Ensure that activities are implemented in accordance with OWE and UNDP requirements and relevant safeguarding standards.
Perform other relevant duties assigned by the Project Manager.

Job Requirements:

Bachelor’s degree in veterinary science, animal science, livestock production, or related field.
Minimum 5 years of relevant experience in poultry production, vaccination, disease prevention, household poultry systems, and field-based training.
Experience in women-focused livelihoods preferred.
Practical follow-up and simple production monitoring experience required.

Adequate mix of male and female mobilizers required for safe and inclusive implementation.

Practical experience implementing poultry and livestock livelihood activities is highly desirable.

Good knowledge of poultry and livestock production systems and local market conditions.

Experience working with NGOs, UN agencies, or development projects is an advantage.

Experience providing technical training and working directly with rural communities and beneficiaries.

Knowledge of animal health, biosecurity, feeding, breeding, housing, and disease prevention practices.

Strong communication, facilitation, coordination, and field-level problem-solving skills.

Languages
