Job Summary
DML is seeking a qualified and experienced Infectious Diseases Specialist / Internal Medicine Physician to join its medical team in Kabul and the identified provinces.
The successful candidate will be responsible for conducting medical consultations, physical examinations, pre-employment and pre-travel medical assessments, reviewing and interpreting laboratory findings, diagnosing and managing infectious diseases, and providing medical advice and treatment recommendations to patients.
The incumbent will play a significant role in evaluating laboratory-confirmed communicable diseases such as Hepatitis B (HBsAg), Hepatitis C (HCV), Tuberculosis (TB), Syphilis (VDRL), HIV, and other infectious conditions, while ensuring appropriate clinical assessment, counseling, referral, treatment planning, and follow-up.
The position also requires the provision of telemedicine consultations and remote medical support whenever in-person services are not feasible.
Background
The Infectious Diseases Specialist / Internal Medicine Physician will support DML by integrating clinical evaluation with laboratory diagnostics to ensure accurate patient assessment, timely medical intervention, and evidence-based healthcare services.
The position requires a highly competent physician with expertise in infectious diseases, internal medicine, clinical assessment, diagnostic interpretation, patient counseling, and telemedicine services.
Key Responsibilities
1. Clinical Examination and Patient Assessment
- Conduct medical consultations and patient evaluations.
- Perform physical examinations and general internal medicine assessments.
- Conduct pre-employment, pre-departure, fitness-for-work, and medical screening examinations.
- Obtain detailed medical histories, including:
- Past medical history
- Surgical history
- Medication history
- Family history
- Occupational exposure history
- Travel history
- Assess patients presenting with signs and symptoms of communicable and infectious diseases.
- Provide medical fitness evaluations and recommendations where applicable.
2. Infectious Disease Diagnosis and Management
- Diagnose, assess, and manage infectious and communicable diseases.
- Evaluate laboratory-confirmed cases of:
- Hepatitis B (HBsAg)
- Hepatitis C (HCV)
- Tuberculosis (TB)
- HIV/AIDS
- Syphilis (VDRL)
- Other bacterial, viral, fungal, and parasitic infections
- Develop evidence-based treatment and management plans.
- Provide follow-up consultations and clinical monitoring.
- Refer complicated cases to specialized healthcare facilities when required.
- Ensure compliance with national and international infectious disease management guidelines.
3. Laboratory Result Review and Interpretation
- Review laboratory reports and diagnostic findings.
- Correlate laboratory results with clinical presentations.
- Interpret results from:
- Serology
- ELISA
- PCR
- GeneXpert
- Hematology
- Clinical Chemistry
- Microbiology
- Immunology
- Provide clinical recommendations based on diagnostic findings.
- Support laboratory staff in resolving clinically complex diagnostic cases.
4. Patient Counseling and Health Education
- Provide medical counseling regarding infectious diseases.
- Educate patients on disease prevention and infection control measures.
- Counsel patients regarding treatment options, prognosis, and follow-up requirements.
- Promote public health awareness and preventive healthcare practices.
- Maintain confidentiality and ethical standards in all patient interactions.
5. Telemedicine Services
- Provide remote consultations through telemedicine platforms when required.
- Review electronic medical records and laboratory reports remotely.
- Offer virtual medical advice, diagnosis, follow-up, and referral recommendations.
- Ensure continuity of patient care through telemedicine systems.
- Support provincial and remote patients who may not have direct access to specialist services.
6. Medical Reporting and Documentation
- Maintain complete and accurate patient records.
- Prepare medical reports, certificates, and clinical assessments.
- Proper documentation of diagnoses, treatments, referrals, and follow-up plans.
- Prepare periodic activity reports as required by management.
- Maintain confidentiality of medical records and patient information.
7. Coordination and Professional Collaboration
- Coordinate effectively with laboratory personnel and healthcare providers.
- Participate in medical review meetings and case discussions.
- Provide technical guidance regarding infectious disease management.
- Support quality assurance initiatives and continuous service improvement activities.
8. Duty and Availability
- Be available during assigned duty hours and emergency situations.
- Participate in on-call duties when required.
- Be willing to travel to provinces for assessments, supervision, outreach activities, training, or medical missions.
- Be available to provide telemedicine support outside Kabul when operationally necessary.
