The Organization of Human Welfare (OHW) is a non-governmental organization (NGO) and is non-political, not-for-profit, and impartial organization with no bias towards a particular religion, ethnicity, or political belief. It has its own independent legal status and entity. OHW is registered with the Ministry of Economy in Kabul, Afghanistan (Registration No: 1014) and is a member of South West Afghanistan and Baluchistan Agency for Coordination (SWABAC), the coordinating body for NGOs in southern Afghanistan. The Managing Director of OHW also formally represents SWABAC in coordination meetings at the national level.

Duties & Responsibilities

We are seeking a skilled and passionate Horticulturist to join our team. As an Horticulturist, you will be responsible for overseeing various aspects of agricultural operations, including crop production, soil management, pest control, and farm maintenance. Your role will involve conducting research, implementing best practices, and ensuring the overall efficiency and sustainability of our agricultural processes.

Responsibilities:

  • Plan, design, and supervise the establishment of orchards (e.g., pistachio, almond, fig, and other fruit trees) in target areas.
  • Provide technical guidance to farmers on orchard management, including planting, spacing, pruning, irrigation, and fertilization.
  • Support the selection and distribution of high-quality fruit saplings based on agro-climatic conditions.
  • Train beneficiary households on improved horticultural practices and climate-smart agriculture techniques.
  • Monitor orchard growth and provide regular follow-up support to ensure proper maintenance and productivity.
  • Identify and manage plant pests and diseases, and advise on appropriate control measures.
  • Coordinate with project teams, extension workers, and local authorities (e.g., DAIL) for effective implementation of orchard activities.
  • Assist in developing seasonal work plans and technical guidelines related to orchard management.
  • Collect field data, document progress, and prepare regular reports on orchard activities.
  • Ensure proper utilization of distributed inputs and adherence to project guidelines. Promote sustainable orchard practices to improve household income and food security.
  • Support community mobilization and beneficiary selection processes when required.
  • Assist other departments with field-level support tasks as required.
  • Regular reporting to project manager or direct supervisor.
Job Requirements:
  • Graduated from Agriculture faculty or related field.
  • At least 3-5 years of experience in related field.
  • Strong organizational and coordination skills.
  • Knowledge of training and experiences of training in the same field 3-5 years
  • Knowledge of research on agriculture experimental design and practices.
  • Knowledge in gender equity, gender equality and perspective.
  • Be able to work in isolated areas with low facilities and travel by long walk between the target villages.
  • Effective member of team and role model; demonstrates creativity in seeking better ways to do things and shares with team, and promotes high standards.
  • Anticipates problems and regularly provides solutions.
  • Computer skill specially on Ms Word, Ms. Excel and PowerPoint and internet
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal abilities.
  • Fluency in Pashto, Dari and knowledge of English is an advantage.
