Job Descriptions:

Job Purpose and Role:

Reporting to the UK Head of Communications and Giving, you will be at the forefront of demonstrating to various audiences, including the public, donors and other stakeholders, how Afghanaid is changing lives in Afghanistan. You will take the lead on content creation,  identifying and pursuing first engagement opportunities, and the retention and growth of our individual giving supporter base. You will produce content for our fundraising communications; manage our social media channels; engage with existing, new and potential supporters online; and maximise opportunities for growth. You will also take support with the creation of materials for institutional donors and implementing partners, ensuring adherence to Afghanaid’s brand identity. You will be given close support and guidance to undertake the tasks detailed below.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Work closely with other members of the Communications and Giving Team to coordinate all supporter liaison and fundraising communications activities.
  • Identify first engagement opportunities and opportunities for positive exposure of Afghanaid that may inspire new support.
  • Liaise with project staff in Afghanistan to gather case studies and photos to develop into communications content and support them to deliver effective reporting for institutional donors that encourage further support.
  • Ensure all content collection follows safeguarding procedures, informed consent and ethical communication standards, especially when gathering participant stories and sensitive information.
  • Maintain regular communication rhythms with programme teams to ensure accuracy, contextual awareness and respect for security protocols in all materials produced.
  • Contribute to quarterly or annual communications plans that outline priorities for content, storytelling themes and supporter journeys.
  • Support internal communication needs when required, such as updates for staff or internal briefings.
  • Support external consultants in the delivery of photography and videography materials and facilitate their access to Afghanaid projects and the communities we serve.
  • Facilitate media interviews with team members in Kabul, briefing colleagues on key discussion points and monitoring the press enquiries email inbox.
  • Enhance Afghanaid’s presence among institutional donors, NGOs, consortiums and other vital partners in Afghanistan by organising events, taking part in key meetings and creating clear, engaging communications tailored to sector audiences.
  • Lead on the development and implementation of a social media strategy.
  • Create, edit and provide engaging content for social media to the London Office, including images, videos and infographics with corresponding captions.
  • Use social media platforms to promote our website content and drive traffic to our website.
  • Help oversee, collect and analyse social media metrics to assess the effectiveness and reach of our online presence and make recommendations for improvement.
  • Produce regular reports on digital performance and identify learning that can enhance supporter engagement.
  • Monitor online content posted by others on our social media platforms and respond in an appropriate and timely manner.
  • Identify opportunities to engage new audiences, potentially with targeted content.
  • Identify and cultivate relationships with new social media accounts, including high profile accounts and individuals, working with other members of the Communications and Giving Team to engage these contacts in appeals, campaigns and events.
  • Identify trends and cultural moments on social media that are relevant to Afghanaid and identify ways to get involved.
  • Help develop, maintain and execute a social media content calendar across platforms to grow community engagement, awareness and adoption.
  • Work with the Head of Communications and Giving to cultivate relationships with high profile celebrities, influencers and social media platforms.
  • Support reactive or crisis communications when events in Afghanistan require timely, sensitive and accurate messaging.
  • Regularly produce content for the website and use analytics tools to increase SEO and identify areas for improvement and expansion.
  • Ensure content on social media and the website is coordinated and in line with brand guidelines.
  • Help maintain and update brand assets when required and support colleagues to use them correctly.
  • Work with the Head of Communications and Giving to produce content for the website, such as press releases and statements in line with the media strategy.
  • Use social media and the website to increase subscribers to our email list.
  • Produce coordinated multi channel campaigns to ensure the best user experience and increase engagement and donations from individual givers.
  • Lead on the creation of content for new subscribers to welcome them and use information on the database to segment the lists and provide personalised donor journeys.
  • Ensure all email and data handling is compliant with relevant data protection and supporter privacy standards.
  • Support the Head of Communications and Giving to pursue and execute fundraising campaigns, both in house and with external partners, for example UK Aid Match, The Big Give and various national newspaper Christmas appeals. This will entail producing creative communications for social media in particular and providing logistical support.
  • Contribute to monitoring and reporting on campaign performance and propose improvements for future activity.

  • Undertake any other duties as and when required by the line manager and or overview manager.
  • Participate in training and professional development opportunities provided by Afghanaid to build skills and strengthen expertise.
Job Requirements:

Education & Professional Qualification

The position holder should hold at least a Bachelor’s degree in communications or another relevant field.

Work Experience

Minimum of 5 year’s proven experience in relevant field, including Strong experience in using social media platforms and experience in photography for social media as well as filming short-form video content, ideally with an international organisation.

  • Proficiency in using design software including In Design and other Adobe Suite products.
  • Ability to speak Dari and/or Pashto.
