Johanniter is working is Afghanistan since October 2002 providing emergency aid, rehabilitation of health facilities, medical care and capacity building for community health workers, students, teachers and professionals of NGOs and government agencies in disaster preparedness and first aid skills. Johanniter’s country office is located in Kabul and has operational coverage in the North, Northeastern and central region with possibility of expansion in the South and Western provinces of Afghanistan.

Job Summary & Purpose:

As part of the Mobile Health and Nutrition Team in Takhar responding to the drought-affected population, the EPI (Expanded Program on Immunization) focal point is responsible for ensuring the availability of sufficient vaccines and related supplies by timely requesting materials from the Line Manager or EPI Medical Doctor. The role involves maintaining accurate and timely records and reports of all immunization activities in line with EPHS standards. Additionally, the staff member actively participates in all relevant meetings, workshops, and trainings to stay updated on immunization protocols. EPI activities are strategically planned and organized to meet set targets and ensure effective immunization coverage among the affected communities.

Main Duties and Responsibilities:

  1. Ensure correct preparation of cold boxes and vaccine carriers with frozen, clean ice packs and temperature indicators to maintain cold chain during outreach sessions.
  2. Maintain all vaccines at the proper temperature, protecting them from heat, sunlight, and freezing throughout transport and service delivery.
  3. Administer vaccines only while they are kept on ice packs, using disposable needles and syringes for each patient.
  4. Accurately use the appropriate diluents and strictly follow the national immunization schedule when vaccinating children and women.
  5. Ensure timely and age-appropriate administration of vaccines, giving the right number of doses at the correct intervals.
  6. Inform caregivers about the next vaccination date and ensure proper counselling on vaccine benefits and potential side effects.
  7. Follow safe medical waste disposal protocols, collecting sharps in safety boxes and disposing of them per health guidelines using an incinerator.
  8. Complete and submit weekly immunization statistics using official registration forms, vaccination cards, and report formats.
  9. Report any operational issues promptly to the supervisor and support the preparation of vaccination data tools and the immunization database.
  10. Assist the Medical Doctor in all related immunization activities, including providing health education and counseling, and fulfill additional tasks as assigned.
Job Requirements:

Education:

12th Grade graduate, but Nurse is preferred.

Experience:

At least two years of relevant experience.

Language Professions:

Proficiency in Dari or Pashto is required.
