Johanniter is working is Afghanistan since October 2002 providing emergency aid, rehabilitation of health facilities, medical care and capacity building for community health workers, students, teachers and professionals of NGOs and government agencies in disaster preparedness and first aid skills. Johanniter’s country office is located in Kabul and has operational coverage in the North, Northeastern and central region with possibility of expansion in the South and Western provinces of Afghanistan.

Job Summary / Purpose:

As a member of the Mobile Health and Nutrition Team in drought-affected areas of Takhar province, the Hygiene Promoter is primarily responsible for delivering community-based hygiene promotion and supporting the implementation of WASH activities. The incumbent plays a key role in enhancing community awareness on safe hygiene and sanitation practices, while also providing technical assistance to provincial WASH staff to strengthen preparedness, prevention, response, and recovery efforts. This position focuses on improving community engagement, promoting behavior change, and ensuring that affected populations are well-informed about essential health and hygiene measures to reduce disease risks and support overall well-being

Main Duties and Responsibilities:

  1. Deliver hygiene promotion and prevention awareness sessions in drought-affected communities to improve health and nutrition outcomes.
  2. Establish and train Water Management Committees to ensure sustainable water use and hygiene practices in target areas.
  3. Conduct health and hygiene training for project staff, government personnel, and orient community representatives on water management.
  4. Develop and regularly update training materials aligned with MRRD and MoPH policies to meet the specific needs of drought-affected communities.
  5. Prepare and deliver community-level PowerPoint presentations tailored to local needs and cultural context.
  6. Ensure timely distribution of IEC materials, hygiene kits, and sanitation supplies to vulnerable households.
  7. Supervise and monitor program implementation at both community and health facility levels to guarantee quality and impact.
  8. Compile and submit activity reports, including success stories, and perform any additional tasks assigned by the Medical Doctor supervisor.

Minimum education is diploma in the relevant field.

Experience:

At least two years of professional experience in WASH/environmental health or related subjects.

Language Professions:

Proficiency in Dari or Pashto is required.
